Yes! Grant

The goal of the Youth and Environmental Sustainability (YES!) project is to increase the number of middle school and high school students who use critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills to understand the environmental topics of climate change, decision-making processes, and both point and nonpoint source water pollution. These issues were originally addressed through learning modules in a collaborative venture between the Advanced Technology Environmental Education Center (ATEEC) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), resulting in the Technology and Environmental Decisionmaking(TED) learning module series.

Eastern Iowa Community Colleges (EICC) is now designing YES! workshops for science teachers in EICC’s service area (EPA Region VII), using the TED learning modules. The workshops will inform educators on the use of the modules and accompanying activities in their classrooms. The workshops will assist teachers in guiding students in using science and technology to make informed environmental decisions. A total of 40 educators are participating in the workshops, pilot-testing the TED modules, evaluating the modules and learning activities, and assisting EICC/ATEEC in developing a YES! Educator Guide for further dissemination among educators.
