Sustainable Energy Education and Training (SEET)

Green technology may be “the largest economic
opportunity of the 21st century.”*

The Sustainable Energy Education and Training (SEET) Project was developed by the Advanced Technology Environmental Education Center (ATEEC) and partners to help build the capacity of energy and environmental technicians to meet the challenges of energy sustainability in the 21st century workplace. The SEET project provides professional development training for upper level high school and community college technology instructors. Training focuses on the areas of sustainable energy and energy efficiency, delivered through ten-day intensive annual technology workshops at various research institutions (such as the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and the Colorado Energy Research Institute at Colorado School of Mines) and continues through online networking activities.

Each summer since 2007, at the SEET Technology Workshops, content experts share knowledge about research advances in energy technology, the implications for a sustainable energy future, and the current and potential requirements for technicians. In 2009, a mini-workshop was held at NREL for past SEET participants to evaluate the project, make recommendations for the online components of the project, and to develop a recommended curriculum for the next SEET Technology Workshop. Instructors from the workshops continue to be connected and supported by an active online network and workshop follow-up support. Sustainable energy knowledge is further extended to additional technology educators through dissemination events facilitated by workshop participants in their home communities.

As of June 2012, SEET Technology Workshops have served:

  • States/Territories: 35 (AK, AZ, CA, CO, CT, DE, FL, HI, IA, ID, IL, KS, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, NC, ND, NH, NM, NY, OH, OR, PA, PR, SC, SD, TX, VA, VT, WA, WI, WV)
  • Schools: 107
  • Educators: 116 (18% high school)
