The Information Technology (IT) department at Scott Community College in Bettendorf, Iowa has opened its new Virtual Reality (VR) Lab. Virtual reality and simulations instruction will be offered at the lab through the college’s IT program. Components include a 3D projection studio, a 3D image deconstruction machine, a game using an Oculus Rift VR headset, and a bodysuit that captures motion with cameras and LED lights. Although currently best known for use in computer game development, lab technologies such as 3D modeling and simulation can be applied to many different fields of study, including engineering, architecture, manufacturing, agriculture, and safety and health.
Money to build the lab came from a grant for Iowa community colleges. The Eastern Iowa Community Colleges (EICC, of which Scott Community College is a part) used part of its grant money to install this new state of the art VR lab. The lab is located in downtown Davenport, IA inside the Interactive Learning Lab at EICC’s Advanced Technology Environmental and Energy Center, located across the street from the Figge Art Museum.
