Eastern Iowa Community Colleges’ (EICC) Advanced Technology Environmental and Energy Center (ATEEC) brought in the big equipment Wednesday to kick off a unique collaboration with Caterpillar, Inc., and its local dealer, Altorfer, Inc., designed to encourage students to consider careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
The big equipment was a Caterpillar D7E Track-Type Tractor, a large piece of earth-moving machinery that, despite its size, moves 10 percent more material per hour and 25 percent more material per gallon of fuel than the model it replaced.
But that’s only part of the story. Caterpillar and Altorfer will be highlighted in the Local Leaders section of ATEEC’s Interactive Learning Lab, 201 N. Harrison St. The companies have loaned the center a Track Type Simulator that is used to train operators on a track type Tractor.
