Workshop
The AgEnergy professional development workshop provided 25 community college and high school agriculture, science, and industrial technology teachers with the opportunity to learn ways to bring research on agriculture-based renewable energy technologies to the classroom. The intensive, hands-on workshop was held from June 20–24, 2011 at Iowa State University in Ames, IA. Lodging, meals, and transportation to the workshop were included, along with a $500 stipend. Additionally, there was an option to receive a graduate credit (1 cr.) in curriculum development from Iowa State University.
Participating teachers worked with university faculty who research cutting-edge energy technology. They took away not only knowledge and experience, but a wealth of resources, including lesson plans and lab activities that can be used in their classes. Topics included examining the past, present, and future of agricultural energy, setting the context for new technologies; solar; wind; biofuels; and how advances in all of these areas fit into the agricultural landscape. Throughout the week, university faculty discussed job opportunities, collaborations, and funding available in each of the fields. In addition to university research, teachers visited area businesses to see research being implemented on a larger scale in the private sector.
